About Gurney's
Gurney's has mailed vegetable and flower seeds, fruit trees, berry plants, shrubs and perennials from Greendale, Indiana, since its founding in 1866.

Gurney's traces its story to Charles W. Gurney, a Civil War lieutenant colonel who opened Hesperian Nurseries in Monticello, Iowa. The business later moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, and in 1897 to Yankton, South Dakota. In 1906 the family incorporated it under the Gurney's Seed and Nursery Company name. Its first large full-color catalog came out in 1910, and in 1927 the family bought Yankton radio station WNAX, which it used to promote its products.
Today the catalog still goes out free on request, and shoppers can browse by USDA hardiness zone. Gurney's sells varieties found only in its own range, such as Gurney's Gotta Have It Sweet Corn and Gurney's Perfect Pickle Hybrid Cucumber, along with Reachables dwarf fruit trees. It works with universities and plant breeders on new varieties and is the sole seller of Gardens Alive! fertilizers and pest controls.
