About Harney & Sons

Harney & Sons sells loose-leaf teas, sachets, teabags, iced tea, matcha and teaware from the family tea company John Harney founded in 1983.

Only one coupon fits each order, and it can't ride alongside loyalty rewards. Before you check out, work out whether a coupon or your reward credit takes more off this tea order.

Harney & Sons traces its roots to Salisbury, Connecticut, where John Harney managed the White Hart Inn and learned to blend tea from his mentor Stanley Mason of Sarum Teas. He started out blending at home in the family basement, and his sons Michael and Paul now run the business, with a third generation of Harneys also involved. The company operates its own bottling plant and warehouse, plus shops in SoHo and in Millerton, New York.

Mike Harney is the company's master tea buyer and blender, while Paul developed its signature sachets along with organic juices and ready-to-drink teas. Alongside white, green, oolong, black, pu-erh and herbal teas, the catalogue carries licensed collections such as Historic Royal Palaces and Colonial Williamsburg, plus a Tea for Kids range. The teas are certified gluten-free unless labelled otherwise, with no added sugar.

When shoppers look for Harney & Sons coupons

Harney & Sons coupon searches peak in December, about 1.4× a typical month, and dip lowest in July.

US Google searches, Sep 2025 to Aug 2026. Search interest, not sales.

Does Harney & Sons offer free shipping?

Yes. US orders of $59 or more ship free; below that, checkout shows a USPS or FedEx fee set by weight and zone.

How long does Harney & Sons shipping take?

Tea leaves the warehouse in 2-4 business days, or 3-5 during promotions and holidays, then spends 5-14 days in ground transit.

What is Harney & Sons' return policy?

Opened tea sent back within 30 days earns store credit, while unused non-food items in original packaging get a refund.

Does Harney & Sons offer a military discount?

Yes. Service members verify through VerifyPass for the military discount; Harney & Sons doesn't publish the amount.

How to use a Harney & Sons coupon

  1. Harney & Sons runs on Shopify, so the discount box sits in the order summary on the checkout page.
  2. One coupon goes in per order, and it can't be added to a tea order you've already placed.
  3. Before typing it, scan the cart for custom gift wrap, mystery bundles, gift cards or a subscription, because coupons skip those unless the offer says otherwise.
  4. If you're holding loyalty store credit, choose first: promotional discounts and rewards can't share the same order.
  5. A military code from VerifyPass counts as a discount too, so it takes the coupon's place rather than adding to it.

If your Harney & Sons code doesn't work

  • Minimum order: "20% off Your Order of $30 or More + Free Shipping" needs an order of at least $30.
  • Exclusions: Coupons don't apply to custom gift wrap, mystery bundles, gift cards or subscriptions unless noted.
  • One code per order: Discounts can't be combined or applied to past orders, only one coupon per order, and promotional discounts can't be used with loyalty rewards.
  • New customers only: "10% off Your First Purchase" is for a first order.

More reasons a code fails, and what to try: why promo codes don't work.

More ways to save at Harney & Sons

  • Subscribing is the steadiest saving at Harney & Sons.
  • The first auto-delivery comes 15% off, and later ones can reach 22%, which suits a tea you drink every day.
  • Loyalty credit builds on regular orders and stays usable for 24 months.
  • Reaching $59 removes the shipping fee, which matters most when you only want a single tin.
  • Gift cards are the one item no saving touches: coupons, military discounts and rewards can't be used to buy them.

Harney & Sons questions, answered

Does Harney & Sons ship tea outside the US?

Orders go abroad, Canada included, through Passport, and the shipping price already covers duty, taxes and brokerage. Expect 6-20 days in transit.

Can a Harney & Sons coupon be used on a tea subscription?

Coupons don't apply to subscriptions unless the offer notes it. Subscriptions carry their own saving instead, 15% off the first order and up to 22% on later ones.

What happens to an opened Harney & Sons tea that disappoints?

Opened tea returned within 30 days earns store credit rather than a cash refund. Gifts also come back as store credit.

How long does a Harney & Sons order take to arrive?

Orders ship in 2-4 business days, stretching to 3-5 during promotions and holidays. Ground transit then takes 5-14 days, and first orders over $150 need a signature.

Are Harney & Sons teas gluten-free?

The teas carry gluten-free certification unless a product says otherwise, and none has added sugar.

What does Harney & Sons charge when a package comes back undelivered?

A package returned for a wrong address or left unclaimed is reshipped for $5.50. A refused package has a $6.00 restocking fee taken from the refund.
