How New Year sales usually work

Resolution deals usually start in the last days of December and peak in the first week of January, when most people make their plans. Gyms, fitness apps, meal kits and online courses run their biggest sign-up offers of the year now, often as a free trial, a discounted first box or a lower price for paying annually.

For fitness equipment and activewear, the discount is usually moderate because demand is high. The deeper cuts on treadmills, bikes and home-gym gear tend to come later, around Presidents' Day or once the January rush fades, so compare prices before you buy in the first days of the month.

Organizing is the other big theme: storage boxes, closet systems, label makers and planners are promoted hard in January. Budgeting, language and learning apps follow the same pattern as gyms, with their best annual-plan prices in the first weeks of the year.

Read the terms on subscription offers. A first-month or first-box deal often renews at full price, and some annual plans can't be refunded. Set a reminder before the trial ends, and check whether the low price applies only to new customers.
