About Intelligentsia
Intelligentsia roasts specialty coffee to order in Chicago, from single origins and blends to espresso and decaf sourced through direct trade in 14 countries, and also sells brewing gear and coffee subscriptions.
Subscriptions are where the money is: every subscription order ships free and the first four take 20% off, while one-time U.S. orders need $49 to ship free.
Intelligentsia began with Doug Zell and Emily Mange, who moved from San Francisco to Chicago, could not find coffee they liked there, and on October 9, 1995 welcomed the first customers to their own café in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, where the beans were roasted on site on a Probat L12. The company now describes itself as a specialty coffee pioneer.
It operates coffeebars in Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin, New York City and Boston, plus one in Seoul, South Korea, roasts at its Roasting Works facility in Chicago, and sells bagged coffee through Whole Foods Market. All coffee roasted in Chicago is kosher-certified. Rare and unusual lots are released as Special Selections, recently including Gesha Village and La Tortuga, and a wholesale arm supplies restaurants, hotels and cafés alongside a corporate gifting service.
