You found a code, typed it in, and the checkout says no. It's frustrating, but it's rarely random. Almost every failed promo code comes down to a rule the store set, and once you know which rule it is, you can often still save.
Big stores spell these rules out too. Michaels allows one coupon per product, Papa Johns says its offers aren't valid with other coupons, and Taco Bell keeps some rewards in its app. More examples are in the store rules below.
Start with the quick checks below. If none of them fixes it, the twelve reasons that follow cover the usual causes.
Quick checks first
- Read the code again. Compare it letter by letter with the source, or paste it instead of typing it.
- Check the box you used. Many checkouts have separate fields for gift cards and discount codes. Our guide on how to use a promo code shows where the box usually sits.
- Look at your cart total. Is it still above the minimum the offer names, after any items you removed?
- Look for an end date. If the offer had one, make sure it hasn't passed.
- Remove any other code. If one is already applied, the store may allow only one per order.
12 reasons a promo code fails
1. The offer has ended
Sale codes often stop at midnight in the store's own time zone, which may not be yours, and some end early once a set number of people have used them. A code that worked for a friend last week can be gone today.
2. Your order is below the minimum
"$20 off orders of $100 or more" means the subtotal has to reach $100, usually before tax and shipping and sometimes after other discounts are taken off. Removing one item or applying a gift card can drop you under the line without you noticing.
3. Something in your cart is excluded
Stores often keep certain items out of their codes: products already on sale, new arrivals, gift cards, bundles, subscriptions, or particular brands they sell for someone else. If one excluded item is in the cart, the code may fail outright or apply only to the other items.
4. Items are already on sale
Many codes don't stack with sale prices. The checkout may accept the code and then apply it to nothing, because every item in the cart is already marked down. In that case the sale price is usually the better deal anyway.
5. You already have another code applied
Most stores allow one discount code per order, and many say their codes can't be combined with other promotions. If a welcome code, a loyalty reward or an automatic discount is already in place, a second code may be refused or may replace the first. Try each one on its own and keep the bigger saving.
6. The code is for new customers only
Welcome codes are usually tied to a first order. Stores may check this by email address, account, payment card or delivery address, so a code meant for new customers can fail even if you're using a new email.
7. The code was meant for one person
Some codes are single use or personal: a code sent to your inbox after you signed up, a birthday reward, a referral code from a friend, or a code from an influencer's post. If someone else's personal code turns up online, the store may have switched it off, and it was never meant to be shared.
8. It's for the app, a channel or a membership
Some offers work only in the store's app, only in physical stores, only for loyalty members, or only for shoppers who arrived through a particular email or text message. The website checkout won't accept them, even though the code itself is real.
Group codes work the same way. A student, teacher or nurse discount usually asks you to verify first, often through a service like ID.me or SheerID, and the code that follows is often tied to you, so a shared one tends to fail. Our guides to student discounts, teacher discounts and nurse discounts explain how each one works.
9. It belongs to a different country
Many stores run separate sites for each country, with separate codes. A code for the UK site won't work on the US site, and a code for US shoppers may not work if your delivery address is outside the country. Check that you're on the right site and that the currency matches.
10. The code covers shipping, not the items
A free-shipping code lowers the shipping line, not the item prices, so the total may look almost unchanged. It may also apply only to standard delivery or to certain addresses.
11. A typo or a stray space
Codes are short and easy to mistype. The letter O and the number 0, or I and 1, look alike in many fonts, and a space copied before or after the code can be enough to make it fail. Most checkouts ignore upper and lower case, but not all of them do.
12. The store's system is having a bad day
Occasionally the code is fine and the checkout isn't. A cart that has been open for hours, an old browser session or a payment step that reloaded the page can all drop a code. Refresh the cart, sign in again and re-enter it.
What do store rules that block a code look like?
Here's how those rules read at the stores shoppers search for most, grouped by the rule that trips people up most often. Each line tells you where the store says it and when.
One code per order, or no combining
- Michaels: one coupon per product and one coupon of each type per day. Framing coupons can't be combined with other coupons. Seen on Michaels' rewards page, Oct 8, 2026.
- Fashion Nova: generally one discount code per order. If you enter several, it applies the highest discount, and codes stack only when a promotion says so. Seen on Fashion Nova's help center, Oct 8, 2026.
- Papa Johns: its offers aren't valid with any other coupons or discounts. Seen on Papa Johns' homepage, Oct 8, 2026.
- Quince: offers, credits and discounts can't be combined with each other. Seen on Quince's terms page, Sep 29, 2026.
- VistaPrint: only one promo code per order. Some codes combine with other offers, such as free economy shipping on $100 or more, but the codes in its current banner don't. Seen on VistaPrint's offers page, Oct 8, 2026.
- Bed Bath & Beyond: coupons can't be combined with any other offer or coupon, or applied to past purchases. Seen on Bed Bath & Beyond's site, Sep 29, 2026.
- Postmates: one promo code per order, which you can combine with Postmates Cash and other discounts. Seen on Postmates' promo page, Sep 29, 2026.
Items and charges a code doesn't cover
- Old Navy: its credit card first-purchase discount excludes gift cards, shipping, taxes, items from third-party sellers, other Gap Inc. brands and the Clearance Center. Seen on Old Navy's customer service page, Oct 8, 2026.
- Target: gift-card-with-purchase and buy-one-get-one offers leave out items sold and shipped by Target Plus partners, and BOGO discounts don't cover tax or shipping. Seen on Target's help page, Oct 8, 2026.
- Shutterfly: the terms of its current sale exclude savings plans, video plans, yearbooks, gift cards, in-store pickup orders and past purchases, among others. Seen on Shutterfly's promotion details page, Oct 8, 2026.
- Boot Barn: buy four or more pairs of boots, or five or more of the same item, within 30 days and you count as a bulk buyer. Bulk buyers can't use coupons, welcome or birthday discounts. Seen on Boot Barn's bulk buying policy page, Oct 8, 2026.
- Lola Blankets: sitewide promotions usually exclude bundles, gift cards and some limited-edition items, and discounts don't apply to taxes or shipping. Seen on Lola Blankets' discount codes page, Sep 29, 2026.
- Mpix: print discounts exclude metal, canvas, poster, acrylic and wood prints, plus add-ons like framing, mats and mounting. Seen on Mpix's coupons page, Sep 29, 2026.
- Lenovo: its current spend-and-save code excludes clearance products, servers, server accessories and Bose audio. Seen on Lenovo's deals page, Oct 8, 2026.
App, channel and location rules
- Pizza Hut: whether discounts and specials combine varies by restaurant, and offers vary by participating location. Discounts don't cover tax, the delivery charge or the driver tip. Seen on Pizza Hut's homepage, Oct 8, 2026.
- Chipotle: promotions are valid only on its website or app, and typically not on catering, Burritos by the Box or third-party delivery orders. Seen on Chipotle's delivery promotion page, Sep 29, 2026.
- Taco Bell: exclusive rewards and the sign-up reward work only in the Taco Bell app, and the sign-up reward isn't valid for web pay-ahead, pickup or delivery orders. Seen on Taco Bell's homepage, Sep 29, 2026.
- SpotHero: the first-reservation offer, 10% off up to $5, works only in the app and excludes monthly reservations. Seen on SpotHero's promo code page, Sep 29, 2026.
- El Pollo Loco: print and email coupon codes don't work for app or online orders, and online codes don't work in restaurants. Seen on El Pollo Loco's coupon policy page, Sep 29, 2026.
Store not here? Open its page on Offertium. If the store publishes code rules, you'll find them in its facts, and each offer card lists its own conditions under "See details". You can also browse by category: Restaurants & Food Delivery, Clothing & Fashion and Arts, Crafts & Hobbies. Still nothing? Look for a "promotions" or "coupon policy" section in the store's terms page or FAQ.
What to try next
- Read the offer's terms. On Offertium, open "See details" on the offer card. The store's conditions are there, with the date the offer was last seen.
- Try the store's other ways to save. A first-order email signup, a student discount or a free-shipping threshold can be worth more than the code that failed. Our Hot deals page lists offers that need no code at all.
- Ask about a price match. Some stores match a lower price from another store, or refund the difference if their own price drops after you buy. Our guide to stores that price match shows who does.
- Ask the store. If a code should work and doesn't, support can often apply the discount by hand, or at least tell you why it was refused.
- Tell us. After you reveal a code on Offertium, answer the "Did it work?" question. If it failed, we look at that offer again on our next check.
How we try to prevent this
Every offer on Offertium shows when we last saw it or checked it, so you can tell how fresh it is before you click. "Checked" means the code worked in a real cart on that date. "Verified" means our editor confirmed it with a recorded check. We leave out referral links and single-use codes, and if a code fails when we try it in a real cart, it comes off the page. The details are in how we check codes.
Many store pages also have a short "If your code doesn't work" list, written from that store's own rules, such as its minimum order or what it excludes. Find your store to see it.
Questions shoppers ask
Are promo codes case sensitive?
Most stores accept a code in upper or lower case, but some checkouts do treat them as case sensitive. Type it exactly as shown, or paste it, and it won't matter.
Can I use two promo codes on one order?
Usually not. Most stores allow one discount code per order, and many say their codes can't be combined with other offers. Fashion Nova, for example, applies only the highest discount if you enter several. The store's terms, or the rules on its Offertium page, tell you which applies.
Why did my code work yesterday but not today?
The most likely reasons are that the offer ended, it reached a usage limit, or your cart changed. Codes tied to a sale often stop at midnight in the store's own time zone.
The checkout accepted my code but the price didn't change. Why?
The discount may apply only to some items in your cart, or the items may already carry a lower sale price that the code doesn't stack with. A free-shipping code lowers the shipping line, not the item prices.
