What goes on sale for Winter Sales
Winter sales are the clearance that follows the holidays. From early January, stores mark down what didn't sell in December, and coats, boots, sweaters and cold-weather gear get cheaper as the weeks go by.
January is also the month of fresh starts and white sales, so bedding, towels, storage, fitness gear and activewear are promoted hard. By February the clearance racks thin out and spring stock starts to arrive.
- Winter coats, boots and sweaters
- Ski, snow and cold-weather gear
- Bedding, towels and linens
- Holiday decor and leftover gift sets
- Fitness gear and activewear
How winter sales usually work
Most winter sales open in the first days of January, often straight after the after-Christmas sale, and they tend to run in waves. A store may start with a modest markdown and add an extra percentage off clearance later in the month. Some call it a winter clearance, others a January sale. It's the same idea.
Cold-weather clothing is the main event. Coats, boots, knitwear and ski and snow gear are usually at their lowest from mid-January into February, because stores need the space for spring. The trade-off is choice: popular sizes and colors go first, so if you need a specific size, the early weeks are safer.
At home, January white sales cover bedding, towels and linens, and furniture and mattress stores often hold sales in the same weeks. Holiday decor, lights and gift sets left over from December are marked down too, which makes it a good time to stock up for next year.
Clearance often comes with tighter terms. Final-sale items may not be returnable, and some stores shorten the return window on markdowns, so read the policy before you buy. If you're waiting on a bigger purchase, Presidents' Day weekend in mid-February usually brings another round of furniture, mattress and appliance sales.

When is Winter Sales?
We treat January and February as the winter sale season, from New Year's Day to the last day of February. After-Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day have their own pages. The next season runs January 1 to February 28, 2027.
How to save more on Winter Sales
- Check the clearance section more than once; many stores add extra markdowns as January goes on.
- Buy next winter's coat or boots now if your size is still in stock.
- Read the return terms on clearance; final-sale items often can't be sent back.
- Spend holiday gift cards on clearance items to make them go further.
