About Western Union

Western Union sends money from the U.S.

to 200+ countries and territories, paid out as cash pickup, into bank accounts or to mobile wallets, and it also handles bill pay, prepaid cards and money orders. Every transfer carries a fee plus an exchange-rate margin, and the promotions on offer target that fee on a single online transfer, which makes the funding method the detail to get right.

Western Union traces its history to 1851 and began as a telegraph company. Its corporate site recounts how it completed the first telegraph line to cross North America, added a money transfer service over that network, and later ran the WESTAR communications satellites and the Valentine's Day Candygram, before turning fully to cross-border payments and sending its final telegram the day after it became a publicly traded company.

The company says it now reaches all countries other than Iran and North Korea through an agent network of more than 500,000 locations alongside its digital platform. Beyond transfers, the US site offers inmate payments, mobile top-ups and a member deals area, and it can be read in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Simplified Chinese, French and Vietnamese as well as English.
