About ButcherBox
ButcherBox is a frozen meat and seafood subscription: you fill each box with beef, pork, chicken and seafood cuts, and gift boxes are sold too.
Your biggest cost lever is box size, since the Signature plan runs $179, $249 or $319 depending on how many proteins you take.
ButcherBox started in 2015, when founder Mike went looking for grass-fed beef for his family and ended up buying a share of a cow from a local farmer. The company is based in Watertown, Massachusetts, is B Corp certified and says it has no outside investors. Its standards ban more than 200 ingredients, and it has pushed for antibiotic-free school lunches and campaigned to protect Bristol Bay, where its salmon partners fish.
Its grass-fed beef and lamb come from Australian ranches and are cut and packed in the US, while grain-finished beef is raised in the US. Pork is crate-free, chicken options include organic, free-range birds, seafood is wild-caught, and a third party audits every protein for animal welfare or sustainability.
