VIA Rail is Canada's national passenger rail service, selling one-way train tickets in CAD across Economy, Business and sleeper classes, plus travel packages and group trips.
Fares change by day and departure time. The rule that matters most: tickets can be exchanged or refunded only before departure, so lock in a discounted fare once your plans are firm.
VIA Rail's network falls into three main regions: the Ontario-Québec corridor from Windsor to Québec City, the western line from Toronto to Vancouver, and Atlantic routes linking Montréal with Halifax, alongside a set of scenic adventure routes. Business travellers get lounges, corporate accounts and the option of chartered train cars, while on-board services include Wi-Fi, entertainment, food and drinks, and cabins.
The operator puts weight on accessibility, with special assistance services, ASL video and support for special meals, medical needs and travelling with pets. Its site is offered in several languages, and frequent riders can join the VIA Préférence loyalty program to earn points toward future trips.
Does VIA Rail have student and military discounts?
Yes. VIA Rail lists a student discount and a Canadian military discount; the terms sit on its discounts pages.
More about shopping at VIA Rail
Fare classes
Economy, Economy Plus, Business, Business Plus and Sleeper Plus, priced per passenger one way in CAD and varying by day and time.
Kids' fares
Children ride at 50% off in Economy and 25% off in other classes except Business and Prestige; under 2 travel free on a lap.
Refunds and exchanges
Allowed before scheduled departure under the fare conditions, with possible service charges; after departure the ticket is non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
VIA Préférence
Points on every trip, redeemable for travel, plus a 500-point welcome bonus after CA$250 of travel in your first six months.
Travelling alone as a child
Kids 7 and under need an adult, and children 8 to 12 travelling solo must book the unaccompanied minor service.
VIA Rail takes discount codes and travel passes in the booking search form, the same place you pick your route, date and passenger count.
Enter it there before you search, so the fares that come back already reflect it.
CAA members can get 20% off select trains, and the Economy Plus and Business discount of 15% applies when you book 30 or more days ahead, so plan the trip date before the search.
Picking a cheaper fare later doesn't trap the money: on an exchange to a lower fare, the difference goes back to your original payment method.
Bookings paid with points or certificates, and Sleeper Plus cancellations, have to go through an agent.
More ways to save at VIA Rail
Discount Tuesday fares reward a flexible schedule, since prices vary by day and time anyway.
Families save on the kids' rates, and a child under 2 on your lap rides free.
Joining VIA Préférence before your first trip earns points from the start and puts the 500-point welcome bonus within reach.
Booking through a VIA Rail profile also lets you modify or cancel online without calling, which helps if you're watching for a better fare before departure.
