Best Time to Buy Furniture: Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to buy furniture is usually in January and July, before new collections arrive, and on the big holiday sale weekends: Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day and Black Friday. Outdoor furniture is typically cheapest at the end of summer, from August into the fall.

When does furniture go on sale?

Furniture runs on a collection calendar. Many makers bring out new styles twice a year, in winter and summer, and stores tend to clear older pieces just before. That's why January and July are often good months to buy.

On top of that, furniture stores lean hard on three-day weekends. Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day are all typical furniture sale weekends, and Black Friday has become one too.

Some stores run their own named events as well. Z Gallerie holds a semi-annual event, CB2 a semi-annual dining event and Joybird a semi-annual sale. If your favorite store has one, it's often worth the wait.

What's the best month to buy furniture?

Here's how a typical year looks. Every store sets its own calendar, so treat this as a pattern, not a guarantee.

When should you buy each kind of furniture?

Sofas, beds and dining sets

Aim for January, July or a holiday weekend. Bigger pieces often need weeks to arrive, and made-to-order sofas take longer, so order early if you want them before a holiday. Dining pieces get their own events at some stores in the fall, when people start planning for hosting.

Patio and outdoor furniture

Desks and office or gaming chairs

Baby brands follow the general calendar, with holiday weekends and Black Friday as the main sales. Buy early: cribs and dressers can take a while to arrive.

What should you check before you buy furniture online?

• Delivery type. Curbside, room of choice and white-glove assembly are priced very differently.
• Lead time. Made-to-order pieces can take weeks. A sale price doesn't help if it arrives after the holiday.
• Return fees and conditions. Many stores need the original packaging, and some don't take returns after delivery at all.
• Price adjustments. A few stores refund the difference if the price drops soon after you buy. See our price match guide.
