About Cometeer

Cometeer sells flash-frozen specialty coffee capsules from independent roasters, brewed at 10x strength so you melt them into hot or iced drinks without a machine.

The figure that matters most is the membership price: 40 capsules every 4 weeks for $80, against $105 for the same box bought once.

Cometeer began with cofounder Matt Roberts, who started testing frozen coffee with ice trays in his own kitchen. In 2014 he brought an early prototype to specialty coffee veteran George Howell, and the company was then formed with Doug Hoon as CTO and Karl Winkler heading engineering, both engineers with MIT and Northeastern training.

Each coffee is brewed and then frozen at -321ºF, and the capsules keep for 36 months in the freezer. Cometeer says it partners only with roasters that buy through direct trade, dealing with farmers without middlemen, and it sorts the range by roast level, with decaf and half-caff picks and a limited Stellar Series of rare beans. The aluminum capsules contain no grounds and go in curbside recycling, while the spent grounds are sent off for composting.
